Systems can now be written to operate on the internet. Nothing is installed on your local PCs and all users access the system from a web browser. Instead the software runs entirely on a web server either on your own site or on a third party server. Authorised users can access the system wherever they are. There are fewer problems with back up or disaster recovery and there is no need to provide remote access to your network.
Traditionally software was installed on your PC or your network and it stayed there. If you weren’t in your office then access could be difficult and slow to the point where it became almost useless.
If the software needed to be updated or if there were a problem someone would often have to be available on site to put the problem right. Now high speed internet connections are commonplace and that has opened up a new world of possibilities.
