We take the view that health and safety is not a separate discipline but instead is part and parcel of your everyday work control processes. After all there can be little point in paying a health and safety consultant to produce a risk assessment with control measures which you have no hope of applying to your own situation. The same approach has to be taken with policy and procedure documents. They must be sufficiently detailed to add value to the safety management process without being so long winded as to be useless if a person needs to use them to understand how a job is to be carried out.
A good health and safety consultant will understand your industry, be able to appreciate the particular needs of your company, your work, your clients and your staff and be able to add value to your safety management and work control processes not just produce a pile of paper and leave you to it.
It is the same approach whether you want a DDA assessment or assistance with safety management on a multi million pound project – if your assessment is never read then your money has been wasted.
